Women of the Month | Janeen Kang
Each month, Monday Chic is going to interview one professional woman from various industries and share the story to inspire the readers. This month, we invited our friend who works in the retail beauty industry. She is heading a Beauty Products in a Duty Free Retailer based in Hong Kong – she’s a successful working mom with 2 beautiful kids. Last week we got to sit down with her and ask her some questions about work, motherhood, fashion, etc.
Keep scrolling to read what her story:
1. Can you share your background?
My name is Janeen Kang and I’m Head of Beauty for APAC at a travel retail company based in Hong Kong. I was born and raised in Korea, went to college in Seattle, and met my lovely husband there. He is American, handsome and extremely hard working. I also have two children with him, a 9-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy who are absolutely crazy but full of joy.
2. How did you get into the Retail Beauty Industry?
My very first job was in the beauty industry but working for a distributor, not a retailer, but I didn’t enjoy too much at first. Then I got a job at Nordstrom in Seattle and had an amazing experience of learning retail business, of course, beauty specifically. And then I just never left retail beauty industry since then.
3. What’s the best advice for someone trying to get into Retail/Beauty Industry?
The beauty industry is a very fast-paced industry but with a lot of excitement. The beauty industry has different offers in terms of a job. It can be the Brand side to develop the brand in the region. Or the Retail side to make sure the right brands are in the right location along with the trend. It can Marketing, creative design, planning (ordering team) or e-commerce. The best advice to you to be successful in the beauty industry is that you need to be adaptable to changes and understand the balance of art and science. And because it is a fast-paced industry, you need to be able to make decisions precisely and quickly, and not to be afraid to take risks.
4. You are a mom of 2 kids - any advice for women with a career that are soon to be moms on how you manage the balance between your career and your family?
I have to say the word ‘Juggler’. We are juggling between all the tasks that are given to us and on the top of that, things that we want to do. The key thing to remember to moms or soon to be moms is that don't waste your time feeling guilty being away from your children, instead enjoy every moment when you are with them and have a quality time whenever you can. My weekend is dedicated to family since i get to only see my kids before they go to school and a little time at night before they go to bed during the weekdays and I try my best to keep social gatherings during weekdays so that I can fully dedicate my time to kids during the weekend but I also manage to have some late-night parties after kids go to bed!
5. What’s your Chic Monday look like?
I am quite simple when it comes to fashion and that is why I am the biggest fan of Aneri top. I have both colors, black and nude, and they literally match well with most of my clothes!! It’s awesome! Monday morning is always quite lazy for me since it’s right after the weekend. So I make it super simple. Effortless chic will be my Monday look.
Big thank you to Janeen for sitting down with us. If you have any other questions that you would like us to invite a guest from a specific industry for our next month's interview, please feel free to leave a comment down below and we’ll try our best to make it happen!
